Galapagos National Park:
Unique Wildlife

Galapagos National Park: the ecosystem of many

unique species: unusual and wonderful animals and

plants.

Such a variety of life-forms (biodiversity) in this small

area! Many of its diversified flora and fauna can not

be found anywhere else on earth.

To protect the Galapagos unique wildlife the

Government of Ecuador has declared ninety percent

of the Islands as the Galapagos National Park.

The native animals show exceptional tameness

towards people: they trust you.

The smallest birds or the largest mammals: they

are not afraid of man.

The unique wildlife includes marine animals:

the Galapagos Marine Reserve.

This rare and wonderful submarine world is also very

vulnerable.

The Islands offer the natural-history-in-the-making view.

Your adventure travel vacation should allow you to visit several islands, as

each of them has unique species.

Appreciate and preserve the very qualities of Galapagos Islands that make

them so unique!

The Galapagos fauna and flora had no natural predators until man arrived.

When the settlers came, they planted crops in the volcanic soil,

destroying many bird nests. The settler’s animals hunted eggs, chicks, and

even adult birds.

Flightless birds of Galapagos, like cormorants and the Galapagos penguin

have been in danger from the introduced animals.

Most of the native gazers of the Islands – the Giant Tortoises, were killed

for food by early hunters and whalers. The reptiles were easy to catch

because they moved slowly and passively.

Today, the Galapagos are viewed as world heritage. The fragility of the

islands’ ecosystem means that the situation is very serious.

Tourism is to save the Galapagos by providing the money and awareness

that conservation is necessary.

Is tourism endangering the islands by contributing to the extinction of the

unique species of the islands?

We don’t want the Islands to loose their very qualities that make them so

unique.

The Galapagos are very vulnerable

to man-related influence. Modern

economic and social pressures are

a big risk to the islands. We must

take positive actions to help

preserve their native flora and

fauna.

To ensure the conservation of unique Galapagos ecosystems, we have to

stay informed and knowledgeable about the subject.

To protect the Galapagos ecosystem take pictures of the Islands -

but do not take anything else from there!

To learn how you can help to save this biodiversity, and to have the most

of your Galapagos vacations, get some information about the Islands

before you actually go there.

Travel videos and books are excellent source of information.
